Way back at the end of 2019, I shared the Christmassy second half of a short piece I had written in my creative writing class that semester. I had fully intended to publish this first half, “Two Seasons: Summer,” in the summer of 2020, but I somehow forgot. Then, I thought to do so last summer, but again forgot :’) So, here we are nearing the end of summer 2022, and I remembered! That’s what counts!! Anyway, here is the first bit of a short essay that is really meant to be read together but which I halved for the sake of the blog hehe…
“Two Seasons: Summer“
There is nothing else like the early start, hurried departure, beautiful drive, and breathy arrival. I see the ocean! peeping out from behind the foothills. The windows are down, and the air smells and feels of salt. I let it wash all over me; I am drinking it in. This is the signal that I’m about to be at my happiest for the next eight, lovely, wonderful days.
I sit on the soft, soft sand. Gulls fly overhead and the waves crash and fall before me. I hear my little brother and cousin shout as they caper about, throwing the frisbee. My mother sits, deep into a novel, munching on a snack, and curled up in an oversized sweatshirt. My father and tio sit talking. My sister and cousin are in the waves. My tia takes a nap. All is best in the world.
This is the height of the summer.
I run besides the surf; it laps against my feet. My heart is soaring. Waking, eating, walking, talking, laughing, being. I am living life to the fullest. Every moment is precious to me. 8 days, 192 hours, 11, 520 minutes, and 23, 040 seconds of bliss.
It is the end. We pack up, eat our last meal together, and depart. I take these days and store them in my heart.
Thank you so much for reading this simple, diary-like little piece!! I just got back from Pismo about a week ago, and I’m missing it so much. Drudging up “Two Seasons: Summer“, a piece that was inspired by it, and listening to the crash of the waves from the videos I took is taking me back in all the best ways <3
