A bit of background…
Welcome to my new space: Brine and Books!! I’ve had this in the works for awhile now, and I’m so glad to finally have seen it come to fruition. I actually wanted to buy my own domain and go self-hosted for about a year now; shortly after I relaunched my blog last July, I knew I wanted to have a more professional site.
In January, I made it a goal of mine to make that a reality sometime this year, and I finally did it! I’m actually so glad that it took me this long to do it, as I also decided to change my blog name, and it would have been so much trouble (& money) to go with my original plan: go self-hosted with Siteground and register twinklethoughts.com.
Taking the plunge…
Fortunately, I kept putting it off and, because of that procrastination, I settled on Lyrical Host after hearing so much good about it and picked a lovely new name. *I really can’t stress enough how fantastic Lyrical Customer Support are; they helped me with anything and everything I asked them about during this process. If you’re thinking of going self-hosted soon, or switching the host you’re with because the prices are too high, Lyrical Host is certainly the way to go!*
So, about the name: Brine and Books. I knew that this time around, I wanted a name that really reflected a bit of me. I also wanted it to parallel my content to some degree. Here was my thought process behind that: first, I write a lot of posts that could be classified as “lifestyle.” Second, I now write more bookish content, and this is also something that I wanted to do since the start of this year, but I was a little afraid to take the plunge. (I finally did back in April, and I’m so glad I did!) Lastly, I adore the sea with all my heart—so much so that I plan to live along the coast one day.
Behind the name:
Where does this leave us? Brine is defined, according to Merriam-Webster, as “the water of a sea or salt lake.” Thus, this word is representative of one of my greatest loves and is also symbolic of the lifestyle content of my blog. Books is pretty self-explanatory :’) I don’t think I need to elaborate on its meaning, but within this context, it obviously reflects another of my loves—reading. It’s been a favourite past time of mine since I was 4 ,and it clearly mirrors, as well as announces, part of what this blog is about.
What will be new?
I’ll continue to take this blog in a more bookish direction whilst maintaining the lifestyle-type posts I enjoy writing. My hope is to introduce another category to my blog, sometime later this year: some of my own writing.
I’ve dabbled in poetry, and I really enjoy writing descriptive pieces of scenic nature–capturing the feeling of a certain moment. It’s certainly a little daunting to share those aspects of my writing, but as my blog proceeds down this literary path, why not??
Recently, I discovered the word belletrist, and it’s a variant of belles lettres. Belles lettres are defined, again by Merriam-Webster, as “literature that is an end in itself and not merely informative; specifically: light, entertaining, and often sophisticated literature.” A belletrist is therefore “a writer of belles lettres.” I fell in love with this, and my new aspiration is to be a belletrist, writing literature of this nature. Will I ever get there? Who knows! But I’ll certainly have fun trying.
All of this brings me to my conclusion. My new and improved little blog will continue to be a space for lifestyle and bookish content, and I will be working to create more and more book-related posts. My personal writing projects might just have their debut here as well.
