Another day of Blogmas is upon us!! Today, I want to share 4 traditional Christmas reads. Some have been in my life since I was born, and others have come as me & my siblings have grown up. These are part of the Christmas collection that my mom puts out in this pretty basket every year. (Do I count these towards my Goodreads goal? :’) Just kidding.) This was a hurried post, otherwise, I might have snapped a few more photos :’)
The Newborn King, Dalmation Press
This photo here, and the one above, are from one of my favourite picture books that I read as a child: The Newborn King. It briefly follows Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, focuses on the birth of Christ, and relates the angel-experience of the shepherds. I loved to flip through this as a kid!
Mary, Did You Know? by Mark Lowry
One of the most famous, modern Christmas songs is placed in a children’s book format complete with beautiful illustrations and the lyrics to the side. Mark Lowry also wrote a foreword on how this song was conceptualised and eventually created.
I’ve grown up listening to him as part of the various gospel music groups done by the Gaithers, and I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written on the theme of Jesus’ dual humanity and Godhood. This was another favourite of mine :–)
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, retold by Julia Noonan
I loved this edition of the famous song. Julia Noonan creates a Christmas spin with beautiful illustrations that depict a family preparing for Father Christmas’ arrival. The warmth and magic of the season just spills out from the pages of this book.
Treasury of Christmas: Stories for Families, by H. Moore
I saved the best for last. This was (and still is) my all-time FAVOURITE of favourites within the collection. I ADORE the stories in this “treasury.”
There’s one about a fourth Wiseman who never made it to Jesus’s birth, but saw him right before He died. There’s another about a young child who wished to give the newborn babe a pillow, and on the way to do so, gives pieces away to those who need it. Eventually, his kindness is unknowingly rewarded when he gives the pillow to Mary, Joseph, and Jesus as they flee to Egypt.
