I did a little book shopping over the last couple of weeks! Although June isn’t over yet, and I did just receive a Barnes & Noble gift card, I think I’ll bide my time and make no more bookish purchases this month :’) So, here’s a little May & June book haul!
Two in historical fiction
Ahhh, historical fiction—one of my first loves growing up. I last read Salt to the Sea during my senior year of high school (from the library), and I absolutely adored it. Although I previously held off on buying it so I could get the beautiful hardback edition, I saw this at only $6 and honestly just couldn’t resist it any longer. I’m looking forward to revisiting this story!
The Alice Network has been on my tbr since I became a book blogger back in 2019 :’) I’m excited to read a fresh new-to-me historical fic! All I’ve heard are great things about this read. Two timelines, and both tied to each of the World Wars??? I’m intrigued, especially as I have nurtured an affection for non-linear storytelling.
Fables & Fantasy
I saw this gorgeous vintage edition of Aesop’s Fables and knew I had to have it. This is a 1968 edition based off of the translations of George Fyler Townsend’s. I was interested in this, so I did a mini-dive. It was Townsend who began the practise of stating a pithy and brief moral at the close of each fable!
I haven’t read Aesop in ages—other than the occasional fable in The Book of Virtues, which I’m currently reading with my brother—so I’m looking forward to thumbing through this in the future.
Purchased these three books at a charming new & used bookshop in Santa Cruz called Two Birds Books, which actually just opened up at the end of 2020! I already want to go back, and I’d definitely recommend stopping there :)))
Ahh, Beren and Luthien. I have been DYING to get my hands on this for ages now, and I finally allowed myself to do so when I was at B&N a couple of weeks ago.
This is unique from the story in The Silmarillion in that it is in full length, and, I believe, in the style that Tolkien originally intended. If you’re familiar with this story, then you’re aware that much of what Tolkien wrote about it was in verse form, and this has both much of the “lay” as well as prose. I. can’t. wait. to read this!!!
