Finally introducing some of my own writing, ahhhh!!
The time has come, & I’m now going to share some of my creative writing. This is my mild attempt at a braided essay, entitled “Autumn Child.” I thought I would write a poem for this special time of year, but some prose came to me instead. (Shout out to my creative writing non-fiction class that I’m currently taking; it’s getting me so inspired!!)
At first, I wasn’t sure that I liked where I was going with this piece, but eventually, it all came together for me. I started this essay with a couple of sentences & left it for a bit. Last week, I was sitting in the library after my last class, & I decided to take another wack at it. It still took me a little longer than usual, but I like how it ended up.
Hopefully, although it’s a very simple piece of writing, you enjoy it, and it gives you all of the cosy, Autumn feelings hehe.

Braided Essay: “Autumn Child”
The air is crisp with excitement. Leaves fly everywhere as if they have nowhere to go. Gold, red, orange, yellow, the world is so vividly alive even as it dies.
September. The heat begins to subsist. It lingers here and there but knows it isn’t wanted. Sometimes it overstays its welcome, creeping into October shamefacedly. Equinox has come but hasn’t asserted itself just yet, so the rays of sunlight come and go, tempting and teasing as they make their last waltzes of dominance. I remember the start of many journeys and catalyst of so many loves.
Inspiration Falls. It must be snatched up, captured in a photograph, preserved in a book, put in a frame, and treasured for all time. Can you get a taste? The words come fast and furious, there is no time to stop, only time to express it all in a frenzy before it fades away into the bleak midwinter.
October. Heat makes its last hurrahs, shaking hands all around, before it departs to the glee of all present. The mornings are cold, the afternoons warm, the evenings cool. Is it time to pull out the extra blanket to put under the duvet? Maybe not just yet. Pumpkin spice, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and allspice permeate the air. Candles, cookery, coffee, clothes.
It’s almost like Lothlorien, and “the sun is merry in the woodland under the leaves of gold!” Golden trees, golden light, golden walks. Almost, but not quite. Time can only stand still for so long. Lothlorien will not be fully realized until the streets of gold.
How beautiful is the library–peaceful, calming, a place to hone thoughts into words, ideas into written actions, and dreams into fantasies—it is a friend to Autumn. Sips of coffee, sporadic bursts of typing, feverish scribbles, flushed reading, knowledge excited, creativity pushed, and all in a golden frame of mind.
November. Topaz. The climax before the resolution of winter. The extra blanket is on the bed, coats are out, and the fireplace is on. I am lost in the world of Prince Edward Island where love creeps to one side as an old friend. Youth is still on my side, two decades down, how many more to go? Who knows. Anniversaries of happy memories follow me, I often sit in spells of nostalgia, feeling, feeling, feeling everything. When will I feel the fullness? Has it already passed me by? Was it when I experienced it Four the first time? Videos, diaries, songs, I look back with fondness. So much of what I love was born many November’s ago. What began in September continued to be fully realized in November. Autumn is culminating.
My mind wanders to that special place. The place I want to exist in, in the future. What is it like during Autumn? I have seen it in Summer, when I am at my happiest. But I have yet to see it when leaves are falling and the blue of the sea is near the red and gold of Fall. Do the mountains blaze in colour while below, the grey of the sea continues to lap at the white shore?
The sequoias and redwoods tower above, and the stillness is wonderfully and deliciously overwhelming. Sticks, pinecone bits, and leaves crunch under my feet. Water is falling, rushing, crashing. Stones are skipping, and the air is, oh! so fresh. So clear, so uplifting. The cabin holds the warmth and laughter of my flesh and blood. Memories that will last a lifetime.
We gather in thanksgiving, indebtedness, and gratitude. The food only serves as a reminder of the delights of life that we have been so unworthily granted—and granted in abundance. Unadulterated freedom, beautiful family, loving friends, and most importantly, spiritual redemption.
Oh, you Autumn child! Who knew that so much of what makes you come alive would be born in the season that you were? Who knew that it would it all connect? That every fibre of every passion is somehow related to another? Even years later, the pattern would continue without you even realising it. Perhaps this is why you are always enlightened when Fall rolls around. Perhaps this is why writing comes so naturally to you as Equinox begins.
The air is crisp with excitement because baby, you’re on the brink. Who loves you, pretty mama? Your love goes free, and you’re still high with a little feeling. It’s time to party like it’s 1999 and forget about silly eye-colour generalisations while you have another toast to the girl almighty. Meet in the hallway because there is a time for one more sweet embrace, oh to be loved and to be in love, for love is the hardest art to learn. He knows. He has known all along. The hairs on your head numbered, your tears in a bottle, your image in the likeness of His. Autumn revives all of this inside of you. It has come; He has sent it again, and you are free.

How did you like my braided essay, “Autumn Child”? I had a lot of fun writing this, even though it was a bit messy at first. Sometimes, you just have to keep pushing through the writer’s block to get to something that you’re happy with. I actually got a little bit of inspiration from a very old post of mine: A Welcome to Autumn–Why I Love It. I recalled how I felt when I wrote that, and those feelings came rushing back to give me the boost I needed. Happy Autumn & happy writing 😉 !! <3
